Introducing Jake

Continuing our mini series about the players and staff, allow me to introduce you to Alternate Captain Jake Oakley:

1. Which team do you look forward to playing the most and why?

I’m looking forward to playing Manchester again. You can’t beat a good ‘War of the roses’ game.

2. What is your personal aim this season?

My personal aim for this season is to help everyone on the team develop. I’d also like to get my first ever sledge hockey goal

3. Favourite food?

Cheesy garlic bread (from Pizza Panda in Woodseats). YUMMY!

4. Favourite band or musician?

I have lots of favourite bands but a handful of them are: Jimmy Eat World. Passenger. Sum 41. Of Monsters and Men. New Found Glory (and many many more).

5. If you could attend any sporting event in the world, what would it be?

One sporting event I would really like to go to would be to see the Nashville Predators, winning the Stanley Cup (I’ll be waiting a few more years yet).

6. Why/How did you become a Steelking?

I’ve been an ice hockey fan for years and would take every opportunity to watch a game as I could. I was already aware of sledge hockey but I really wanted to try it for myself following the Sochi Olympics. I found out Sheffield were starting a team and asked if I could join one of their early training sessions and the rest is history as they say

7. Most embarrassing moment on the ice?

When I was training for the UK Forum All-Star ice hockey weekend in 2015 and at one of the practice sessions I had a great break away chance. I went full steam and managed to beat the defence man and got my shot on net (which went in I believe). Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stop in time and smashed straight into the end boards. I crushed my hand and arm and hit my head. It really hurt – but because of it I taught myself how to stop quicker

8. Who is your favourite hockey player (sledge or normal) and why?

My favourite player of all time has to be ‘The Duke’ Tommy Plommer. He was my hero as a kid.

9. If you could be another teammate for a week who would it be and why?

Mark Colquitt – He has chickens.

10. Who is the funniest teammate?

Steve ‘Stevo’ Smythe is a very funny guy (and a true gentleman too)

11. What is your favourite website

It has to be Facebook or Twitter. I’m always checking them.

12. Who is your dream date?

Megan Fox or Rachel Riley (Be still my beating heart).

13. Who’s the best dressed in the team?

I’d have to say I’m one of the best dressed. I do love a good suit

14. What training drill do you dread the most?

Because we are still a new team I really enjoy the challenge of trying to be better so I don’t dislike any drill but I would always much rather have a scrim – You learn more about team mates and yourself when you playing hard and things come more naturally for me when I’m not over thinking them.

15. One word to describe you?

One word to describe me – Passionate.
