Player Interview

Here we have a short interview by Lewis Coleman of East Sheffield Sport with our own Mike Rhodes.

LC – When did you first get involved with the Steelkings?

MR – It’ll be three years ago this summer. I’ve been a hockey fan for a long time and one of my oldest friends, Jake, is the Steelkings’ Chairman. He was bugging me to come down and give para ice-hockey a try for a while and the club runs some learn-to-sledge sessions from time to time where anyone can come down and give the sport a go. I went along to one of those, loved it, and they haven’t found a way to get rid of me since!

LC – With the season due to start in May and with the League and play off title to defend are you disappointed that this now looks unlikely?

MR – I think the season is officially off now. It is disappointing but there’s little point in getting frustrated about things you can’t control and you can look for positives: we were adding a second team, the Steelking Bees (or Steel Stings) to the league this year and this gives a lot of new players that extra time to train – once we’re back on the ice of course – and to get up to speed. A couple of the team had injuries and now there is extra recovery time. We want to retain our titles and win trophies of course, but our bigger aim is to grow the profile of this club and the sport and we can still be doing things towards that. And hopefully later on this year if and when things get back to normal we can do some sort of friendly game or there might kind of tournament with the other British teams so it might not be a completely wasted year game wise. So it is a disappointment sure, but I’m more disappointed by things that have actually happen in games rather than in games that will never happen.

LC – Sport isn’t just about exercise, how much are you missing the camaraderie with your teammates?

MR – Yeah that’s difficult. Everyone was really welcoming when I first started and we really are like one big family, plus there a few people on that team that I’ve been friends with since I was a kid. We’re lucky in a way that with social media, instant messaging, things like Skype, we can all stay in touch but it isn’t the same. We used to do a lot together socially. And we usually train on a Friday night. No matter how bad a week you might have had you always knew you were seeing friends and letting off some steam on the ice for an hour or two and I miss that. I’m sure we all do.

LC – Is the inclusiveness of para Ice Hockey something you enjoy and would recommend to others?

MR – Absolutely. The sport is designed to be all inclusive and the Steelkings really embrace that. The sport welcomes disabled and able-bodied players, and it welcomes anyone regardless of gender, age, sexuality, religion, or any other characteristic and the Steelkings are the most welcoming group of people I’ve ever known. It’s a huge, huge selling point of the sport and of the club for me and I know what that acceptance and those friendships you can build with teammates can do for people.

LC – What are the challenges of working alongside training and playing matches for the Steelkings?

MR – To be honest I’ve been pretty lucky in that regard so far. My work have been understanding in letting me leave early for training if I need to and make my time back elsewhere and all the matches so far have been on weekends. I know it’s a bigger struggle for some of the team but I’ve been fine so far.

LC – How are you keeping yourself occupied without being able to train and play matches with the Steelkings?

MR – With a lot of films! Seriously, whilst I can’t go to the gym and we can’t train properly, I still have my gear so I can practice stick handling – but with tennis balls not pucks. I don’t have weights at home but I have been doing cardio and stretches. And I can re-watch games. It’s not ideal, but again it’s about looking for the positives and making the best out of what you have.

Help GB go to the 2016 World Championships

As most of you probably know, Bryan Hackworth our netminder, also plays for the GB team. They are flying out to Japan next month to take part in the World Sledge Hockey Championships and are hoping to at least repeat if not better their Bronze Medal from the 2013 Championships.

Unfortunately the team have to fund the trip themselves, so if you could spare any money to help get them there it would be very appreciated.

Introducing Peter

peter

We hope you’re all enjoying the nice weather while it lasts, time for another member of the Steelkings family, this time it is our photographer Peter Best

1. Which team do you look forward to playing the most and why?

Manchester, I think it’s carried over from being a Steeldogs fan, there’s nothing quite like beating a Manchester team

2. What is your personal aim this season?

To get a photo of the Steelkings scoring a goal

3. Favourite food?

Chinese, especially Salt and Pepper Chicken – Yum

4. Favourite band or musician?

I don’t really have one

5. If you could attend any sporting event in the world, what would it be?

I’d love to go to either the Bridgestone Arena or the Air Canada Centre and watch the Maple Leafs play the Predators, the only problem would be who to cheer for.

6. Why/How did you become a Steelking?

I’d seen the tweets about the team, and after talking to Jake about them at a Steeldogs event decided that I wanted to be involved somehow, brought my camera down to take pictures of Tracey’s first session on the ice. 2 weeks later I got a message from Kim asking if I would take pictures at the up coming game against the Kestrels. Ever since I can be found on the bench during games snapping away.

7. Most embarrassing moment on the ice?

While taking photo’s of the new sledges in the off season, I had to sit on the ice to get the angle for the shot, not thinking about putting something between me and the ice first when I got back up I was rather cold and very wet.

8. Who is your favourite hockey player (sledge or normal) and why?

Dalibor Sedlar (ex Sheffield Steeldogs Net minder) When he’s on form he’s amazing to watch, and he’s also a really nice guy

9. If you could be another teammate for a week who would it be and why?

Bryan, just because I’d love to have a go at being a net minder

10. Who is the funniest teammate?

Going to say Julie for this one

11. What is your favourite website

Google

12. Who is your dream date?

Scarlett Johannson or Katy Perry

13. Who’s the best dressed in the team?

Definitely Jake or John with their world famous suits.

14. What training drill do you dread the most?

I don’t dread any of them, probably because I don’t have to do them

15. One word to describe you?

Baymax

The family is growing

Friday night we had the pleasure of welcoming 3 more new players to the Steelkings family; Katie, Jake and Ray

Our Alternate Captain Jake Oakley ran them through the basics before we threw them in at the deep end with a scrim for the last part of the session. Thankfully they enjoyed the challenge and we’re all looking forward to getting back on the ice next Friday.

Introducing John

Continuing our mini series about the players a staff, allow me to introduce you to John Oakley:

1. Which team do you look forward to playing the most and why?

Manchester so I can play against my beloved daughter, Ellie.

2. What is your personal aim this season?

To improve generally e.g. puck control, shooting, speed, manoeuvrability, stamina and less falling over

3. Favourite food?

What’s not to like about food? I’ve eaten everything from live mealworms to nouvelle cuisine. A full English always goes down well though!

4. Favourite band or musician?

I like a whole range of music – anything from heavy metal to classical. My favourite genre I suppose is indie and if I had to choose a favourite band of all time it would probably be the Stones

5. If you could attend any sporting event in the world, what would it be?

I’ve done the Summer Olympic Games but would like to attend the Winter Games at some point.

6. Why/How did you become a Steelking?

I was introduced to it by my son, Jake who also plays for the Steelkings

7. Most embarrassing moment on the ice?

Probably when I had set my sledge too high and my arms weren’t long enough to push myself upright again. I was floundering for what seemed like an eternity in front of our own net, although I did manage to stop a certain goal while I was there

8. Who is your favourite hockey player (sledge or normal) and why?

All time favourite I think would be Tommy Plommer who used to play for Sheffield Steelers. It could have been Scotty Allison if he hadn’t defected to the Nottingham Panthers

9. If you could be another teammate for a week who would it be and why?

I’d be Jake, my son, because we are very like-minded but he’s so much younger. I doubt he’d be happy at changing places with his 60 year old dad though

10. Who is the funniest teammate?

Hmmm, a difficult one with so many miserable gits I’m going to avoid nepotism by not saying Jake. Tracey and Baz are always good for a laugh but I think I’ll go with Bry because his smile is infectious and makes me smile too

11. What is your favourite website

Oh, anything serious, intellectual and involves not telling the truth

12. Who is your dream date?

My dream date (currently) would be Rey from Star Wars Episode VII. Unfortunately I’d probably have more chance with Maz Kanata. At a thousand years old she’s more my age group

13. Who’s the best dressed in the team?

Well, Jake and me of course. Have you seen the suits we wear? (how could we not John)

14. What training drill do you dread the most?

Any of them if I’m honest. I much prefer to get stuck into a scrim

15. One word to describe you?

Hell, I dunno, “Wrinkly”. I’m sure my team mates can think of other names too

Introducing Julie

I know you’re all eagerly awaiting the photos from Sundays game against Manchester Phoenix, unfortunately due to a technical difficulty these have been delayed slightly, hopefully everything will be rectified and they will be up on the website this weekend. To be there to see the Stanley cup lifted. With the size of the crowd bet the atmosphere is amazing

6. Why/How did you become a Steelking?

We have followed the Sheffield Steelers since day one so the always loved the sport. When Dave had his accident he heard about sledge and waited for years for the chance to have a go. I went along to watch with our daughter and got involved behind the scenes

7. Most embarrassing moment on the ice?

None (yet).

8. Who is your favourite hockey player (sledge or normal) and why?

Gotta be an old Steelers player The Wild Thing Tim Cranston from many years ago. He was a nuisance always getting in other players way winding them up and although he is short he was never afraid to get into a fight with other big players. Great guy. Great personality
